Mortar Board was established in 1918 as the first nation-wide organization honoring senior college women.  The Society opened its membership to men in 1975, while still maintaining a tribute to its founders and heritage.

While it is an honor to be selected for membership in Mortar Board, it is the commitment to continue to serve which distinguishes between an honor society and an honorary.  Accepting membership requires accepting responsibility, as Mortar Board members play an active role in chapter activities.

Since its creation, over 226,000 college seniors have been initiated into the Mortar Board tradition of scholarship, leadership, and service.  Mortar Board's national network includes 200+ chapters, 50 alumni chapters, and 25 sections.  Members are encouraged to keep their names and addresses current with the National Office following graduation.
