International Orientation begins Aug. 25, 2004
Day to day events!
Aug. 25th 2004 - Wednesday
7:05am All of us O-team Leaders have worked very hard
the past three days to practice and prepare for the arrival of all the new
students! Wonder who will arrive first?
23:00pm Marina Nakamura from Japan/Germany was the first to arrive today! Everyone slowly began to trickle in...O-team Leaders showed everyone to their respective rooms, we gave campus tours, took them to get their Oxy IDs, had lunch and hung out with them. Many students arrived with their parents. At night we ordered Thai food for those who missed the Campus meal because of a later arrival. By 10pm everyone was on campus and in their rooms!
Aug. 26th 2004 - Thursday
22:00pm The beginning sessions!! Truthfully many were
jet-lagged and trying their best to follow each and every session. We began with
a breakfast reception in Newcomb Hall where some faculty members of the campus
came to introduce themselves. After which was followed by various sessions led
by Mickey, Marisa and Sara on Visa Information, Practical Issues, PCU game and
lottery...Marina got all the BIG prizes....but everyone left Newcomb with
something in their hands. There was also a nice Ice-cream break which helped
cool us all from the hot LA summer heat! In the evening we all went to Mickey's
house to have Zankou dinner! It was a lovely house and we are very thankful of
Mickey to let us hang out at his place. After dinner we all went to the ICC
house for a night of karaoke...where most of the people just sat and watched the
O-team leaders sing their hearts out...but we got everyone to join in and sing
and dance to YMCA! :-)
Aug. 27th - Friday
24:00hrs The day out! We began with breakfast in the marketplace and trips to the bank to open bank accounts! Then one more final session of Academics at Liberal Arts School then we were all heading out to Pasadena to get everyone their Social Security cards!! The Social Security office was a quick stop from which we left to go to the Norton Simon Museum in Old Town Pasadena. The Norton Simon Museum houses various art works ranging from the 16th century to the 20th century - there were Picasso's, Degas, Manet's etc...Around 5:30pm, after a LONG group photo shoot, we left to go for dinner at Burger Continental (A good Mediterranean family restaurant). We all had a good meal which prepared us for our shopping trip at Target!! At Target everyone got things for their room - lamps, pillows, blankets, binders, pens, Barbie CD (yes...try and find out who...) After the shopping spree we went to Old Town Pasadena for dessert - some walked to Jamba Juice, others went to 21 Choices for some good frozen yogurt while others went to Boba World for some boba (aka bubble tea) and others just walked around Old Town.
That was the end to the 2004 Orientation! We hope that everyone enjoyed it and that it was a way to help you all slowly begin to feel comfortable here at your new home. Please remember to feel free to ask us any more questions you may have!!
All the best this new semester!
