Jason Kwok ('09) President

Jason Kwok is a senior from San Francisco, California.  Although he had no formal investment experience prior to joining the Blyth Fund, Jason has always been fascinated by the stock market and its role in the economy and politics.  He spent the past summer working in the Health Care Investment Banking division at Credit Suisse as a summer analyst, and he spent the previous summer in the Entertainment Marketing division at Electronic Arts, one of the world's largest publishers of interactive software.  In addition to the Blyth Fund, Jason is also a founding member and Director of The Occidental Entrepreneurial Society.  During his free time, Jason enjoys playing a variety of games and sports recreationally.

Norman Ling ('09) Vice President

Norman is a senior economics major and math minor from Voorhees, New Jersey. Over the summer, he interned for Engemann Asset Management and Beacon Management Group. EAM is a buy side investment fund specializing in small cap growth equity. Norman spent the summer developing valuation and forecasting models while analyzing various companies and industries. Beacon Management Group is a boutique marketing, strategy, and outreach consulting firm providing services for corporations, non-profits, and government agencies. At Beacon, he conducted research, attended meetings, and wrote request for proposals. In his free time, he enjoys reading, beating Josh at table tennis, and cage fighting.


Joshua Lu ('09) Secretary

Josh Lu is a senior Economics and DWA double-major. Going into his second full year as a Blyth director, Josh has been able to take his fund experiences and turn them into great learning opportunities - first as an intern at Yahoo in Burbank, CA researching global advertising trends, and then as a summer analyst at the Multnomah Group in Portland, OR working with investment consulting. On campus, Josh is busy serving on the leadership boards of several other stimulating entities, including the Occidental Campus Democrats, The Occidental Entrepreneurial Society, and the Dean's Advisory Council. When he's not studying, scouring Y!Finance, or working, you'll find him playing tennis or basketball, working on Barack Obama's campaign, or hunting down bad guys and aliens on his Xbox360.

Becky Siegel ('09) Alumni Chair

Becky Siegel is a Senior Economics major and Mathematics minor from Palo Alto, CA. She came onto the fund in April 2007 with no prior investing experience. Through the fund she has learned a lot about researching companies both qualitatively and quantitatively and is eager further her investing education. She has had various internship experiences with NERA Economic Consulting, BrandIQ market research and Sun Microsystems. Becky spent fall 2007 semester abroad in Prague, Czech Republic and is starting a cycling team at Occidental in 2008.

Jacob Weiss ('09) Librarian

Jacob is a Senior Economics major and Spanish minor from Woodland Hills, CA. He became a member of the Blyth Fund in the spring of 2007. He has provided exquisite customer service at Nordstrom since the summer of 2003, where he started as a stock boy in the Point of View Department and worked his way up to his most recent position as a sales associate in the Men's Furnishing department. This past summer, he decided to pick up a second job, as a research assistant for a litigation-consulting firm Resolution Economics. In addition to Blyth Fund, Jacob is a member of DETOX, Occidental's Ultimate Frisbee team. In spring of 2008, Jacob studied abroad in Granada, Spain, where he improved his Spanish and learned more about the EU’s economic policies. He also enjoys riding his road bike to distant locations, playing Scrabble, and hanging out with friends and family. After graduation, Jacob hopes to find a rewarding career where he can utilize his passions for economics and Spanish, and perhaps, retail.

Richard Highsmith ('10) Treasurer

Richard Highsmith is economics major and math minor from Danville, CA.  He joined the Blyth Fund in April 2008 because of his long-time interest in portfolio management and investing.  Last fall he worked for Frazier Capital, a business/property appraisal company in downtown LA where he helped appraisers by researching and compiling reports on subject properties.  Most recently Richard spent his summer abroad in London studying at the London School of Economics and Political Science.  While there he took a class on Analysis and Management of Financial Risk which expanded his knowledge of successful investment techniques.  In addition to being the treasurer of Blyth Fund, Richard is also the treasurer and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.  He is involved with the Future Business Leaders (FBL) fraternity on campus and has attended several events including one most recently at the Disney Corporation in Glendale, CA. Lastly, in his spare time, Richard is an avid golfer and plays on the varsity Occidental College golf team.

Braylan Carroll ('09)

Braylan Carroll is a senior economics major from North Little Rock, Arkansas. He joined the Blyth Fund in the spring of 2007 with a wide variety of interests. As an undergrad, he has interned in many areas including banking at Arkansas Metropolitan Bank, management consulting at Blue Cross Blue Shield, private wealth management at Waschka Capital Investments, and internet search marketing at Yahoo!, Inc. Braylan spent the spring semester of his junior year abroad in Sao Paulo, Brazil. There he studied Portuguese, political economics, and Brazilian culture. Some of his other interests include jazz, theatre, great food, theme parks, and playing the drums.

Alex Salter ('10)

Alex is a junior Economics and Mathematics double-major from Torrance, CA. The summer before matriculating into the college, Alex was an intern at Manhattan Wealth Advisors, Inc., a Manhattan Beach-based financial advisory group. Aside from finance, Alex has played the piano for 13 years, runs, plays basketball, and fences with his dorm mates. Although interested in business and investment banking, Alex currently plans to acquire a PhD in Economics so he will one day be able to teach at the college level.

Liza Detrick ('09)

Liza Detrick is a senior economics major from St. Louis, Missouri. Personally investing in the stock market since high school, Liza is overjoyed to work with fellow peers on the Blyth Fund. In the past, Liza has volunteered at the non-profit organization LA CAN that provides political advocacy for the downtown homeless population and GoGreen Solutions a consulting firm that provides companies with information regarding recycling materials and reducing waste. On the side, Liza designs websites for Occidental College and Blyth Fund. Other serious interests included: midnight bicycle riding, making movies, vegan baking, and playing poker.

 

Lorie Margolis ('10)

I am a junior, Economics major. I am from Sherman, Texas and am interested in going into the film industry.

 

Andrew Blythe ('09)

Andrew is a Senior Economics major with minors in Physics and Mathematics from Sacramento, CA. He had no experience with investing or the stock market prior to joining the fund in April 2008 but has wanted to gain real-world experience for some time. Andrew worked as an intern for the Nestlé Purchasing division dealing with ingredients this last summer, and he spent the previous summer doing econometrics research with Professor Chiou. Andrew is also the president of The Economics Club and a captain of the Ultimate team. His passions mostly reside with good food, good people, and frisbee.


Sarah Henderson ('11)

Sarah is a sophomore Economics major and History minor from Portland, OR. She joined Blyth Fund in April 2008 with little knowledge in investing. On campus, she is a part of the Admissions Team, Orientation Team and Alumni Relations chair for Alpha Lambda Phi Alpha. Last summer, she worked in retail and read investing books! She is excited to learn about the market during such a fascinating time. She also enjoys going to the beach and watching movies.

Basile Trede ('09)

Basile Trede is a biochemistry major from Boston, Massachusetts, who has taken a keen interest in economics. Coming into the Blyth Fund, Basile had little experience with investing, but has always believed that investing is an important aspect in all careers. He will spend this coming summer interning in Munich, Germany for Freudenberg & CO and for Findos a private equity fund. He spent the three previous years doing research in a lab at Institute Pasteur located in Paris, as well as at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah. His research consisted of studying, and mapping mutations in zebrafish which causes neutrophil deficiencies. He is currently working in a lab for Dr. North, a professor at Occidental College, studying the water up-take of cherries. During his free time, Basile enjoys traveling the world, watching his Bostonian sports teams, playing sports recreationally and playing for the Occidental soccer team.
