Campus Culture Committee
The foremost aim of the Campus Culture Committee is to advocate for student interests across campus.
Committee Membership
The Campus Culture Committee shall be composed of 6 Senators. All seats on this committee are permanent and will remain active for a Senator’s full term of office.
Current Projects
The following projects are what the committee is
focusing on this Fall 2007:
-
Environmental Initiatives- Nonda Hannenman
Nonda is working on numerous environmental projects with the environmental club, facilities, campus dining, and Henry McMillan and Professor Vallianatos who worked on the environmental amendment last year. Some small improvements I am trying to make include having more recycling bins in the dorms, academic buildings, and the library, and having bio-degradable to-go boxes in the market place. These are small steps towards what will hopefully lead to bigger projects creating a greener Oxy campus.
-
Improving Oxy Student Website- Andrew DeBlock
Andrew has been in correspondence with ITS and the campus wed designers -
Cultural Graduations- Denise Loera
Cultural Graduations Funding - I worked with the three cultural graduation clubs to allocate $7,500 from the Cultural Graduation Fund between the three of them in the most appropriate way possible. After considering each of the club's budgets, guests, number of students graduating and various other factors, I brought two options as to how to allocate the fund to Senate: either based on a percentage or based on the amount of graduates. Senate voted on November 13th to distribute the fund on a per person basis with API Grad receiving $ 2,451.92, Black Grad receiving $2,379.8, and Latino Grad receiving $2,668.27. I am going to continue to work with Brandy Jones and Naddia Palacios, as well as the cultural grad leaders to continue to push for institutional support. -
Cooler Renovations/Upgrades- Denise Loera
Samuelson Pavilion - I have spoken with Kenna, Jonathan O'Brian and Dean Avery about having Samuelson Pavilion open from 11:30-2:00 a.m. on Sunday-Thursday (as it currently closes at 11:30 on those days). The space will be available to use for studying, watching TV or simply hanging out. It can also be used for programming by a registered club. A student will be hired to work during these hours. Funding for this is being worked on right now and Samuelson Pavilion will hopefully be available by the time that finals come around. -
Vending Machines- Denise Loera
Denise has worked with Amy Munoz on making more of the vending machines on campus ID/meal plan accessible. Based on the revenues that the vending machines in Samuelson Pavilion brought for the month of September, the vending machines in the Library are now card accessible as well. In the future, we are looking to adding more card readers to more vending machines on campus.

Multicultural History at Oxy-Tilak Gupta
Tilak and the rest of this committee of 5, including President Ryan Bowen, visited the Specials Collections in the Library and were consulted by Gene Pauley who told of possible resources such as old newspapers and files. The group has also met with Jim Jacobs, Director of Alumni Relations, who gave us a possible list of Alumni to work with and people to contact.
-
Disability Access- Tilak Gupta
Tilak is working on the disability access at Occidental. At the dinner with Dean Avery, I confirmed that the new facilities will have disability access. I am going to work on some proposal to at least get railings for now. -
Community Spaces- Roberto Calderon
Rob is working on trying to bring in more community base spaces on campus particularly in the Residence halls in small themed communities similar to Pauley and its theme of multiculturalism. First by starting with a Pre-health professions quad or wing of a Hall -
Bill of Rights- Roberto Calderon
Rob is working with Senator Rozell Hodges on trying to get some form of a Student bill of rights on campus -
Newspapers in the residence halls- Roberto Calderon
Rob is working to reinstate the some form of the College readership program with either the New York or Los Angeles times
