II. Review the Not Unhappy Hour Request,

a)      the event is now a service event

b)      the event is now sponsored by at least 2 other clubs.

c)      The event is considered “open” due to the fact that the event is eventually open to all students at oxy.

d)      Funding recommended: $1031.31,

Sen. Alison: recommends more funding due to the fact that the event is an annual event and that it is solely put on by SES.

Sen. Jimmy: said that breaking precedence will cause conflict with other events planned. It sets even more heated senate debates and meetings because we are allowing funding to become arbitrary.

Sen. Teddy: said there is about $1,900 left with original amount with Tailgate party and

Sen. Jimmy: said that we have to be aware that we have November as a month for funding as well.

Sen. Andrew: wants to stick to the algorithm so that people’s feelings won’t upset people

Pres. Kuzio: when you do decide to break from algorithm then your reasons have to be clear. Treatment must be equitable, and if the algorithm is broken then there must be strong reasoning for change

Sen. Max: motioned to pass the amount

Vote: 10-0-0

Second request

Sen. Teddy: Ken Smutny did not want to discuss why the event is cultural so the event is funded at the original amount of 842.50.

Motion by Jimmy, Mike seconded

Vote: 10-0-0

Sen. Jimmy: thinks that it would be unfair to not fund Rotaract because of late funding request issues when the same thing was done for SES and funding was voted on.

Pres. Kuzio: Does senate want to set guidelines for retroactive? This is something to think about in the future.

III.  Letter to Margot

Pres. Kuzio read:

Dear Margo,

Following the closure of yesterday’s Senate meeting, we discussed at length the demeanor of our interactions with those explaining submitted requests.  We realize the planning and hours of devotion sacrificed by you and your team was met with prying inquiry throughout the funding deliberations.  Lamentably, we came to the conclusion our behavior during this dialogue was hurtful to those we endeavor to serve; namely you and the student body.  The questions posed to representatives requesting funds were combative, abrasive, and may have been construed as disrespectful.  While this manner of discourse was never our aim, we feel strongly good intentions are no excuse for shameful action.  The atmosphere of senate meetings is meant to be receptive irrespective of requests made or points raised.  Woefully, we concede Senate’s failure in extending you our full courtesy through the course of this discussion.  In closing, we wish not only to offer you a sincere and heartfelt apology, but will earnestly strive to avoid such occurrences in future meetings.

                                                          Warmest Regards,

                                                                                 Senate

All senators present agreed with the sentiment of the letter and signed it.
