Appointed Representatives 2007-2008

Student Representatives

ASOC is in charge of appointing student representatives to serve on several administrative and academic committees.  New representatives will be selected in September 2008 by Senate.

Board of Trustees Committees

The Board of Trustees meets 4 times per year as part of the decision-making process of the College.  The ASOC President serves as a member of the Board of Trustees.  Student representatives serve on each of the committees and provide a student voice in decision-making.  Contact them if you have any questions, comments, or concerns they should share with the Board of Trustees.

Campus Events Advising Committee (CEAC)

The CEAC is a multi-departmental committee that advises Occidental Community members on events that are large, complex, new, involve alcohol, include off-campus guests, etc.  Students and staff must attend this committee which meets every other week.

We are looking for a student who understands the event planning process and can assist students in preparing for the CEAC meetings.

 Purposes:

·         To facilitate the smooth planning and execution of  events by bringing together event sponsors with representatives from major supporting departments.

·         To oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to events and facilities use.

During the academic year, CEAC regularly meets twice a month and reviews and approves proposed events either due to their unique characteristics, or based upon the requests of the President, any Vice President, Student Affairs, or the Office of Master Calendar and Conference Services.

Faculty Library & Information Services Committee (FLISC)

The Faculty Library and Information Services Committee is the major interface between the library/ITS and the faculty. We report to them on concerns of the faculty (and students) and gather information that we think will help them meet our needs. Since the library and ITS are central to the educational program at Oxy, we think it is important to have student representation. This student would bring student concerns (not just academic) that relate to these programs. The candidates for the new librarianship will meet with the committee, so it is especially important this year. We'd like a student who is an extensive user of the library as well as digital information and who is interested in improving these services to the campus community.

Off Campus Study Committee

The Off-Campus Study Committee (OCSC) at Occidental College is appointed by the faculty.  The Committee consists of six faculty members, the Director of International Programs (ex officio) and one student member.  The OCSC determines academic policy and approves programs.  The Committee also participates in the selection process for Off-Campus Study.    The Committee meets approximately once a month throughout the academic year.  Additional meetings may be required, as needed.

Planning & Budget Committee

From the Occidental website:

Occidental's Planning and Budget Committee is the all-campus committee intended to foster an effective exchange of ideas between the various constituencies on campus (faculty, administration, staff, and students) on a wide variety of topics. As its name implies, the committee tends to focus on the development of the College's budget and on issues related to planning for the College's future, but in any given year it may deal with topics as diverse as next year's tuition level and the site of a new campus building that might not exist for another decade.

The Committee, founded almost 15 years ago, does not have any formal decision-making responsibilities. Instead, it acts as a sounding board by giving feedback to the president and other senior members of the administration on actions and policies that the College is considering for implementation. In addition, the committee acts as a two-way conduit for information on campus through its inclusion of students, staff members, faculty members, and administrators. Committee members don't just provide feedback on institutional issues from their perspective; they also communicate with colleagues not on the committee about Planning and Budget discussions. This two-way exchange of information is one of the main goals of the Committee.
