CINEAP Resolution

Proposed on November 2nd, 2005

Proposed by Dane Muckler

RESOLUTION CONCERNING CREATION OF AD-HOC COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE ELIMINATION OF THE NATIONAL AWARDS OFFICE

Preamble:

The National Awards Office was a full-time professional position dedicated to helping eligible Oxy students apply for national awards. The acquisition of national awards is invaluable in sustaining the reputation and name-recognition of this institution. Each member of the ASOC has a vested interest in the effectiveness of this office.

Last week, the National Awards and Pre-professional Advising Office was eliminated as part of an alleged restructuring process, as reported in the November 2, 2005 issue of the Occidental Weekly.

At the moment, it is unclear why the office was dismantled, or how the administration intends to restructure it.

Resolved:

That the ASOC forms a committee to investigate the elimination of the National Awards and Pre-Professional Advising department. Henceforth: CIENAP

(Committee for the Investigation of the Elimination of the National Awards Position, pronounced: Psi-nap)

That CIENAP be composed of:

At least three (3) student volunteers of which at least one (1) should be from the ASOC Senate, to be nominated at the next General Assembly meeting by a member of ASOC and confirmed by majority vote of Senate.

That CIENAP adopt as goals:

  1. the production of a report detailing why it was decided to eliminate the National Awards Pre-Professional Advising Position.
  2. This report should include:

    1. An accessible explanation of the chain-of-command involved in the decision, and the timeline of the decision making process that occurred.
    2. A written statement from those individuals about the institutional justification for the elimination of the position.
    3. A written statement from those individuals about the new position including:
      1. How it will be more effective than the now-defunct National Awards Office
      2. The timeline for its creation
      3. What the qualifications for the new position will be
  3. to complete goal 1 before December 1, and make an oral report to the GA about its findings
  4. To disseminate written or electronic copies of the report to relevant individuals, including, but not limited to:
    1. The student body
    2. The Occidental Trustees
    3. Interim President Kenyon Chan
    4. The Faculty Council
  5. To discharge all its duties and dissolve no later than January 1, 2006
