General Assembly

Publicity Committee

On November 16th, 2005 a resolution was passed through the General Assembly to form a student committee to work with the Administration and the current Alcohol Committee to reform the current publicity policy. The following is information about the committee and its objectives.

Resolution 3: To establish a committee to review the publicity policy  of Occidental College.

Passed through the General Assembly on: November 16th 2005.

Passed through Senate on: December 2nd 2005.

Final Resolution

A committee is formed to review the Publicity Policy, focusing especially on the following clause, listed under “General Rules”:

Alcoholic beverages may not be publicized implicitly or explicitly, nor may they be depicted graphically. In accordance with the alcohol policy, the publicity may state that the event is Type III and may say “ID required.”

The main reasons for the need to review this clause are as follows:

It contradicts itself, as the permitted phrases, “Type III” and “ID required,” ar
e themselves implicit advertisements for alcoholic beverages.

It is incongruous with the Alcohol Policy laid out in the Student Handbook, which states (under Type II.i and Type III.j), “Publicity for the event (posters, quad signs, voice mail, email, other) may include that it is a Type II [or Type III] event, but may not explicitly include references to drinking or to various states of drunkenness.”

This committee will work with the Office of Student Life, Campus Safety, the Office of Residence and Greek Life, and any other department involved in drafting and/or enforcing the Alcohol Policy or the Publicity Policy, to determine if and how the Publicity Policy may be reformed.
