Alcohol Policy

On October 18th, 2005 a resolution was passed through the General Assembly to form a student committee to work with the Administration to reform the alcohol policy and its accompanying disciplinary procedures. That committee was formed in the General Assembly on October 28th, 2005. The following is information about the committee and its objectives.

Resolution: To establish a committee to review the alcohol policy and its accompanying disciplinary procedures of Occidental College.

Final Resolution

As a student of Occidental College, I would like to propose a resolution to begin a committee to review the alcohol policy and its accompanying disciplinary procedures. The proposed committee shall consist of two ASOC senators, one Residence Adviser, four other students, and Dean of Students Barbara Avery. The General Assembly will nominate the committee. The committee will actively investigate how other liberal arts colleges shape and carry out their alcohol policies. The committee will focus on the judicial processes of ResLife and Campus Safety in regards to disciplinary actions for alcohol related incidents. The committee will investigate the campus culture of drinking at Occidental College. The committee will seek funding and then hire a consultant to help review the alcohol policy. The committee will report every two weeks to Senate on its progress. From this information and collected input from the Occidental Student Body, the committee will work with Dean Avery, Res-life, Campus Safety and the College’s legal council to revise and possibly reform the policy and disciplinary procedures. The revised policy should be presented to the General Assembly by no later than February 8th 2006.

Committee Updates

On April 5th 2006, Devon Puglia addressed the General Assembly.  As apart of his address he announced that the Alcohol Committee was unsuccessful as a group, but that he pursued making recommendations on the alcohol policy on his own.  The following is a link to his recommendations and power point presentation.
