ASOC Access Fund
The ASOC Access Fund is in place to ensure that any student is able to participate in ASOC. It is not considered a stipend and it is not payment for work in the ASOC. The ASOC Access Fund provides monetary support (up to $500 per semester depending upon the budget) for students who demonstrate financial need.
The Access Fund
comes out of the yearly ASOC budget and is defined in the Constitution
as:
“Between 1.5 and 3 percent of the total funds
remaining (after professional employee, KOXY and Newspaper funds are
allocated) will be used to ensure that all students have equal access to
the ASOC student government regardless of financial need.”
Why this Fund is Important:
The time commitment for Student Government is extensive
and is comparable to paid leadership positions on campus. With that said
because positions in Student Government are not paid, students with
strong financial obligations are either excluded from the opportunity or
become drastically overextended in the attempt to balance school, work,
and governmental responsibilities.
It is important that this type of exclusion be recognized for two
reasons. First the type of learning experience gained through
participation in Student Government is an incredibly valuable and unique
one. For this reason, no student should be excluded from this
opportunity because of financial circumstances. Second, this type of
fund promotes matching the composition of Student Government with the
composition of the Student Body. For these reasons, the ASOC Access
fund ensures that equity remains a valuable element of the Occidental
Community.
