The Associated Boardriders of Occidental College (Surf & Snow)
The Associated Boardriders of Occidental College was born out of the widespread student demand for equitable access to the board-riding of California's outstanding beaches and mountains. Our primary goal is to foster compassionate community within the Occidental student body. Our secondary goal is to make the surf and snow board sports accessible and affordable to all students. Many students are drawn to Occidental College, in large part, because of its location. The beaches and mountains surrounding Los Angeles are world-renown. However, many students are unable to enjoy them because of the obstacles of transportation and cost. This club will fit the growing need to solve this dilemma. Each of our events will be open and available to everyone. The building of quality relationships and good-will between members will be of paramount importance. We are stoked.
The Occidental Rock Climbing Club
The ORCC has been founded with several ideals in mind, including physical activity, care and respect for outdoor environments, personal improvement, and teamwork. It is the purpose of this organization to not only promote an awareness of rock climbing as an activity but also to expand upon and introduce members to a lifestyle that utilizes as well as respects the natural environment around them. The ORCC promotes outdoor climbing as well as gym climbing, however the goals in these separate places are different. The objectives of gym climbing are physical training, teamwork, and problem solving, and is, in a sense, practice for outdoor climbing. The outdoor experience is the true one. It is a time when everything a climber has learned is put to the test in a natural environment. When climbing outdoors the ORCC will strive to teach more than rock climbing. It will teach about safety, respecting the environment and in general being able to enjoy one's self in the great outdoors.! The ORCC will be a great addition to the outdoor adventure club, but will focus on one particular activity. However the ORCC will still be able to appreciate the goals and ideals concerning our natural environment here in southern California that the OAK embodies.
Troupe Aiyizan
This is a performance comprised of students, faculty, and alumni who focus on learning the traditional folkloric dances and culture of Haiti. Members rehearse weekly and present concerts at Oxy and in the greater Haitian community of Southern California. This is an opportunity for all members to learn about another culture and share their experiences through performance dance.
Weekend Warriors
The Weekend Warriors exist to provide students with an opportunity to get off campus on weekends to engage in stimulating activities that will be organized and publicized by executive members of the club. The club will have the dual emphasis of promoting the events among under-classmen, who are less likely to have the means and experience to get off campus regularly, and to engage in activities that RHA and similar organizations often find too overwhelming to organize. Organized activities will range from simple day-trips with little to no expense to many day trips requiring extensive planning. Ideally all the events will both be exciting experiences for those participating and will provide a unique forum for students to meet and socialize.
Women's Weight Lifting
The goal of the Women’s Weight Lifting Club is to encourage women’s well being, specifically by assisting women in pursuing weight lifting as a means towards achieving fitness. website
Yoga Club
The
purpose of the Yoga Club is to provide students with a free outlet to
promote physical and mental well being outside of the academic rigor of
Occidental College. The practice of yoga is believed, and proven, to
relieve stress and open the minds, bodies, and hearts of practitioners.
By providing this service to any and all students of the college,
regardless of gender, the Yoga Club hopes to encourage individuals to
care for themselves, including these three components of well being
(mind, body, heart). The goal of the club is to promote regular and
consistent attendance by giving students an environment where they can
feel comfortable as individuals striving for personal achievement
amongst people of all different backgrounds and levels of experience.
In addition we hope to be able to provide this important service to all
without students having to worry about financial abilities and details.
Instructors will support the needs of all in attendance and will be
welcoming and engaging. All classes will be open and appropriate for
people of all levels, while also allowing for their growth and
improvement.
Any and all are welcome. Males and females will be encouraged to join
or to come and try out class. Financial abilities or inabilities will
not be taken into account when allowing membership to the club and
attendance to classes.
