Anime & Asian Film Club

Anime & Asian Film Club exists for the purpose of exposing Occidental College to Japanese animation and films of East Asian cultures.  Through weekly (or biweekly) showings, students can view this ever-growing form of Japanese pop-culture, Anime, and experience cinema of various cultures from Eastern Asia.  A video library of Anime is maintained for the purpose of providing our members with a diverse selection of animation and also gives members a chance to view missed showings at a later date. Films shown outside the scope of "Anime" may or may not be included within this collection. It is our hope that the Occidental community's exposure to these unique films will be both illuminating and most importantly, enjoyable. website

To gather members of the community in order to develop an appreciation for unsuccessful films, B Movies, and cinema that never became widely known. We at the Bad Movie Club believe that 'bad' movies, can be 'good' movies in the sense that they often say quite a lot about the cultural context in which they were made and are excellent examples of filmmaking history.

It is the intention of the club to offer instruction on preparation and cooking of barbecue to anyone wishing to learn. Through our campus-wide events the Barbecue Club seeks to promote community and encourage constructive relationships among the students and faculty of Occidental College. To accommodate the needs of all members of the Occidental community, vegetarian offerings will be served at each club event in addition to the regular meat selections.

Holiday Spirit Club

The purpose of our club is to spread holiday cheer throughout the campus. Too many holidays at Oxy have gone unobserved or improperly celebrated and Holiday Spirit Club wants to make up for these lost holidays. Members will meet to discuss ways to celebrate both major holidays (Christmas, Halloween, etc.) and minor holidays (Labor Day, Memorial Day, etc.). For minor holidays, members will be educated on the significance of the day and hopefully share this information with others, therefore spreading holiday spirit. For major holidays, members will decorate the Community Literacy Center or a designated common room with streamers and other ornamentation and, if the holiday permits, members can also dress up in costumes. We also feel that our club will promote diversity because of the myriad of holidays celebrated: for example, simultaneously celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa and any other holidays that fall during that season. During the spring, one event that we would like to host is an Easter egg hunt for local children either on campus or at an elementary school in the area.  Our main goal is to make holidays more exciting and enjoyable for not only members of the club, but also the children of Eagle Rock.

I ka Poli O Hawaii

This club will strive to help students, especially those hailing from Hawaii, to get the most out of their time at Occidental College.  Our goal is to bring Hawaii students together to ease homesickness and also expose them to new experiences on the mainland (ex. new environments, activities, culture).  Students who are not from Hawaii are DEFINITELY welcome - for them, this club would enrich their lives with the culture and spirit of Hawaii.

No Bull

CLUB GOALS
No Bull is Oxy’s vegetarian resource. We serve to:
1 Support vegetarians/vegans on campus
2 Guide students who wish to become new vegetarians/vegans
3 Educate the campus about vegetarianism

SUPPORT VEGETARIANS/VEGANS ON CAMPUS
We provide vegetarians/vegans on campus with settings where their diet choice is welcomed. Vegetarian diets are the minority in today’s society and are often scorned and scrutinized. We plan events where vegetarianism is promoted and encouraged, so that vegetarians can relax and just enjoy good food!
No Bull introduces the campus to new foods from vegetarian restaurants. Group outings to various vegetarian restaurants around the Los Angeles area will be organized, as well as having these foods delivered/catered on campus. These restaurants include Vegan Express, Tea Shaker, Pita! Pita!, and Orean Express. Transportation will be provided by Oxy vans.

GUIDE NEW VEGETARIANS/VEGANS
No Bull realizes that there are many people who would like to become vegetarian, but don’t know how to start. These people don’t have enough time or confidence to venture into vegetarianism alone, but would if they were doing it along with and had the support of others. No Bull wishes to fill that role for such people. We would like to provide answers to their questions, and advise them on how to make the lifestyle transition successfully.

EDUCATE THE CAMPUS ABOUT VEGETARIANISM
We believe that countless people would become vegetarian if they just knew all the facts about the impact of the meat industry on the world. No Bull’s aim is not to convert, but rather, to educate. We don’t try to push people to change their diets, but we do try to spread awareness about the harmful effects of meat on health, environment, and animal welfare. We encourage people to think carefully about the impacts of what they eat – something that many people would rather ignore. We hope that people will disregard advertisements and societal traditions, and make their own decisions about what to eat.
No Bull educates the campus through meetings. No Bull meetings are not exclusive of just members; the entire campus is always invited. At such meetings we discuss all aspects of diet, from nutrition to environmental impacts. No Bull also offers further reading for those interested, in the form of books put on reserve at the library. We also periodically sponsor viewings of films and documentaries pertaining to vegetarianism and the meat industry.
The campus will notice the presence of No Bull whether or not people attend these events. No Bull constantly has fliers on campus, and distributes free pamphlets on vegetarianism at the mailroom. In addition, every week, we contribute a “No Bull Fact” to the club e-mail list. All No Bull events are open to the entire campus.
