Occidental Classics Club
“Incidentally, I despise everything which
merely instructs me without increasing or immediately enlivening my
activity.”
It is with these words, written by the German poet, Goethe, that
Nietzsche begins his famous essay on the “use and abuse,” or the “worth
and worthlessness” of history. We in the Occidental Classics Club desire
to use, not abuse the study of ancient cultures. We wish to use what we
know of the civilizations of Greece and Rome, of India, Egypt and the
Near East, to challenge us to think more deeply and more productively
about the experiences and actions of our modern lives, and to renew
their intensity. We want to promote and revive the study of Classics as
something relevant to contemporary life, as something that can be
moving, puzzling, engaging and often times, simply fun. We will
therefore emphasize the “lived experience” of ancient peoples and
attempt to make a conscious break from the study of Classics as
traditionally conceived. Our intention, to paraphrase the scholar Oliver
Taplin, is not to go back to the ancients, but to move forward in out
own lives with them.
